Lady Vols Top Hoosiers in Tennessee-Indiana Duals
January 11, 2020 | Track & Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Tennessee women's track & field team opened its indoor season with a dual meet victory over Indiana Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Vols topped the Hoosiers by a score of 71-51 at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse. UT came up just short on the men's side as No. 5 Indiana defeated No. 21 Tennessee 64-58.
Â
"It was a big day for the Lady Vols," Tennessee director of track & field Beth Alford-Sullivan said following the meet. "A 20-point win and a great, full-team effort. Our entire team competed hard and we are fit, healthy and ready for 2020. I am excited to see how far these women can go this season.
Â
"Our men also competed hard. We battled back and forth with Indiana for three hours and I was so impressed with our efforts. We kept a few key athletes out of the lineup that could have given us the few extra points we needed to win, but in the early season we have to make some conservative decisions. I am confident the Vols will have a great season ahead."
Â
Tennessee picked up 15 event victories on the afternoon to go along with two school records and four meet records. Read below for the team's most notable achievements from Bloomington.
Â
MAXWELL OPENS WITH RECORD PERFORMANCE: Tennessee senior captain Joseph Maxwell began his season breaking the all-time program record in the men's indoor shot put. On his final attempt of the day, the Evansville, Ontario, Canada, native launched the shot 19.46m (63-10.25) for a Tennessee record, meet record and half-meter personal best indoors.
Â
SULLIVAN GRABS NCAA LEAD: Senior high jumper Darryl Sullivan posted a stellar season opener, clearing a height of 2.25m (7-4.5) for the No. 1 mark in the NCAA this season. Â
HAYDEN THROWS ROOKIE RECORD: In the first meet of her collegiate career, Chandler Hayden took down the all-time UT freshman record in the women's weight throw with a mark of 19.37m (63-6.75) on her final throw. The performance ranks No. 5 in Tennessee history.

Â
Freshman phenom Britton Wilson ran a 54.72 for the win in her 400m dash college debut. Brooklynn Broadwater and Martina Weil placed second and third with times of 55.34 and 55.64, respectively.
