TRACK CENTRAL: Tennessee-Indiana Duals
January 10, 2020 | Track & Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Tennessee track & field is set to begin the 2020 indoor season this weekend, as the Vols travel to Bloomington, Indiana, for the Tennessee-Indiana Duals at Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 11.
MEET INFO: The dual meet features 28 events, beginning at noon ET with the women's long jump, women's pole vault, women's weight throw and women's 60-meter hurdles. The meet will conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay, scheduled for a 2:40 p.m. start. Live results can be followed at IUHoosiers.com.
MEET HISTORY: This will be UT's fifth-straight season attending the meet, renewing a rivalry between the two programs that dates to 1978. The men's squads matched up 18 times in the 1980's and 90's, and in 2016, UT director of track & field Beth Alford-Sullivan and IU head coach Ron Helmer renewed the series that had been dormant since 1999. The Tennessee men hold a 14-9-1 edge over the Hoosiers, while the women own a 10-4-1 advantage in 15 all-time meetings against Indiana.
WHO'S BACK: Tennessee returns a trio of All-American jumpers from the 2019 indoor season, highlighted by senior captain Darryl Sullivan who claimed a runner-up finish in the men's high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships a year ago. The Marion, Illinois, native cleared a personal-best height of 2.26m (7-5) on his first attempt at the mark for UT's best result in the event since 1994.
Alonie Sutton and Jalen Tate return as triple jump All-Americans for the Big Orange in 2020. Sutton's performance of 13.25m (43-5.75) was good for seventh at the NCAA meet, as she became the first Tennessee freshman ever to earn All-America honors in the women's triple jump. Tate garnered UT's first All-America honors in the event on the men's side since 1987 with a 10th-place outing in his NCAA Championship debut.
Senior shot putter Joseph Maxwell claimed his first-career SEC medal last year at the indoor conference meet with a third-place finish, throwing one centimeter shy of his PR at 18.95m (62-2.25). He will be a key returner alongside redshirt sophomore Jordan West, who holds UT's all-time outdoor record in the shot put at 20.33m (66-8.5).
Alexis Duncan comes off a second-consecutive All-American outdoor season after placing 9th in the 100-meter hurdles last year in Austin, Texas. Indoors, she ranks fourth in Lady Vol history in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.19.
Tennessee's distance crew will look to carry its momentum from the cross country season, in which the Lady Vols had their best fall campaign in a decade. In total, UT picked up four All-Region honors for Megan Murray, Sydney Seymour, Katie Thronson and reigning SEC steeplechase champion Alex Crigger.
Four pole vaulters that qualified for the 2019 NCAA East Preliminary Rounds are back this season in Andrew Ference, Hannah Jefcoat, Tristan Slater and Kim Spritzky. Jefcoat represented UT at the NCAA Championships after breaking the school's all-time outdoor record in the event at 4.18m (13-8.5) during the regular season.
WHO'S NEW: Several Tennessee athletes will make their collegiate debuts at Indiana as UT secured one of the country's top signing classes. Notable newcomers include 2019 U.S. junior national champion Britton Wilson (400m hurdles), New Balance Nationals champion/field athlete of the meet Yariel Soto (decathlon) and Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year Emmanuel Bynum, who swept state titles in the 100m, 200m and 400m dashes in 2019. Vanessa Watson (400m hurdles), Sebastian Cooper (400m) and Riley Buchholz (1600m) also secured high school All-America honors before beginning their careers on Rocky Top.
The Vols have added a handful of transfers to their roster, including three-time Big 12 Champion Steele Wasik as a graduate transfer from Texas. The Medina, Ohio, native ranks top-10 in the country with his personal-best total of 5,817 points in the indoor heptathlon.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will send a group of athletes to Blacksburg, Virginia, for the Hokie Invitational next weekend. The two-day meet is set for Friday and Saturday, January 17-18 at Virginia Tech's Rector Field House.
