Nevin and Cross Finish in Top 25 at Carpet Capital Collegiate

Led by the performances of Rhys Nevin and Spencer Cross, Tennessee places ninth in the opening tournament of the season
DALTON, Ga. – The University of Tennessee men's golf team had two players finish inside of the top 25 at the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
Senior Rhys Nevin picked up his fourth top-5 finish of his collegiate career on Sunday, finishing tied for fourth, individually. The Cheshire, England native was one of just six players to finish below par in the field, posting a three-round score of 215 (-1).

This is the second consecutive season Nevin has placed inside of the top 10 at the Carpet Capital after tying for sixth last season. He was one of just four players in the field to shoot par or better in the final two rounds of play.

He finished tied for fifth in the tournament field with 13 birdies while also being fifth in the field in par-5 scoring at 5-under-par for the weekend.

Joining Nevin inside of the top 25 on the leaderboard was junior Spencer Cross. Cross and Nevin tied each other for the low Vol round of the day, turning in scores of 72 (E) on Sunday.

Cross was the big mover up the leaderboard for the Vols in the final round, jumping up eight spots to tie for 25th, individually. Each round the junior improved his score by two strokes each, improving by 15 positions in total on the leaderboard from the first round.

In the final round, Cross played par golf almost the entire round with just two birdies and two bogeys sprinkled in on his scorecard. This marks the seventh time in his Tennessee career he has placed inside of the top 25 on the leaderboard.

Nevin and Cross' scores helped the Vols move up one spot on the leaderboard in the final round. Tennessee finished ninth in the tournament with a 54-hole score of 893 (+29). Over the final two days, the Vols moved up three positions on the team leaderboard.

On the first tournament of the season:
"We dug ourselves a big hole the first day and never really recovered. We will learn from this experience and be better the next time. We still have all the same expectations as we had before the season started and in some aspects even higher ones."
