#20 Vols Lock Down Lions in 2-0 Win
September 05, 2019 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 20 Tennessee held Southeastern Louisiana without a shot attempt as the Vols secured a 2-0 victory Thursday night at Regal Soccer Stadium. This marks the second consecutive home match that UT's defensive unit allowed zero shots, tying a program record that was set against Mercer on Aug. 25.
Â
Tennessee's transfer athletes from the highly touted 2019 recruiting class accounted for goals in the victory. Sophomore defender Mackenzie George found the back of the net for the first time as a Vol in the first half, while graduate transfer Michelle Alozie put the match away on a header late in the second frame.
Â
The win was UT's eighth-straight at Regal Soccer Stadium, the longest home winning streak for Tennessee (4-1) since 2007.
Â
George scored her first goal for the Volunteers in the 39th minute to put Tennessee ahead 1-0. The Lincoln, Calif. native dribbled the ball from beyond the midline, found an opening and fired a shot from 20 yards into the lower left corner of the netting.
"It's been a while [since I've scored]," George said following the match. "It feels good to be with my teammates and come together after. It's just awesome to be on this team, with everyone working hard for something bigger. It's not just for myself, it's for everyone so it feels good."
Â
Tennessee entered the halftime locker room with a 10-0 advantage in shot attempts and a 5-0 edge in shots on goal over Southeastern Louisiana (1-2-1). The Vols also held possession for 60 percent of the opening frame.
Â
UT gained a 2-0 lead in the 79th minute on Alozie's second goal in as many matches. The graduate transfer connected on a cross at the back post, heading a ball from rookie forward Alicia Donley into the upper left corner to provide some insurance as well as the final score for the Volunteers.
"It felt good to be home," Alozie said. "Obviously we loved the crowd, and it's good to just to be in our atmosphere and doing the normal routine things we are used to. It was good to be back."
Â
For the match, Tennessee outshot the Lions 18-0 with a 9-2 edge in corner kicks. The Vols' 11 shots on goal matched a season-high that was recorded in the 3-0 win against Mercer.
Â
UT goalkeepers Lindsey Romig and Charli Pogany split time evenly between the posts, combining for Tennessee's third shutout in five games this season.
Â
UP NEXT: Tennessee continues non-conference action with a Sunday matinee against the Cincinnati Bearcats. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium.
