Boogades, Harper Claim Google Cloud Academic All-District Honors
May 28, 2019 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee track & field student-athletes Nick Boogades and Nate Harper have been named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District 3 First Team, as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced by the organization Tuesday afternoon.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their contributions on and off the field of competition. Boogades and Harper join nine other student-athletes from Division I schools in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia on the District 3 first team.
Boogades, Harper and all other first-team honorees from other districts will automatically be placed on the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, with first-, second- and third-team Academic All-America selections to be announced in June.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. The Google Cloud Academic All-America program separately recognizes honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and College Division. The College Division includes all NAIA, Canadian, two-year schools and other affiliations.
To be eligible for Academic All-District and All-America distinction, nominees must have reached at least sophomore academic standing and have a 3.30 GPA or higher to go along with legitimate athletic contributions.
Boogades (Edgewater, Md.) boasts a 3.92 GPA through two years on Rocky Top, majoring in Soil Science with a minor in Plant Science. The sophomore was recently named a First Team Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar in addition to taking home SEC Academic Honor Roll accolades this past fall. On the track, Boogades served as the opening leg for Tennessee's championship performance at the historic Penn Relays, splitting 3:02.12 over 1200m as the Vols took first place in the college division. He also set personal records in the 800m (outdoor), 1000m (indoor), 1500m (outdoor) and mile (indoor) as a sophomore.
On track to graduate in the fall of 2019, Harper (Davis, Calif.) is currently pursuing a degree in psychology with a stellar 3.93 GPA. The senior pole vaulter is a three-time SEC Academic Honor Roll honoree and was named to the SEC Community Service in 2018. During this past indoor season, Harper broke the five-meter barrier with a lifetime-best 5.00m clearance at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational (Jan. 19).
Boogades and Harper are the ninth and 10th Tennessee men's track athletes to receive Academic All-District distinction and the second and third since head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan took over the program in 2015. Throwing standout alumnus Cameron Brown most recently received the honors back-to-back in 2016-17.
