AUSTIN, Texas – The Tennessee Vols open the 2019 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday from the Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
The championships run Wednesday through Saturday and open up Wednesday night with just one event, the 800 yard freestyle relay at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday will begin with preliminaries in the morning followed by the championship finals in the evening. A full schedule is listed below.
Tennessee will not compete in the 800 free Wednesday night.
Nine Vols qualified individually for the championships with six swimmers and three divers making NCAAs. Tennessee will compete in four relay events at the championships.
The men enter the week off a complete team performance at the SEC Championships a month ago where they finished third overall. It was the Vols' best placement at SECs since 2011.
Kyle DeCoursey has the fourth seed in the 50 freestyle with a seed time of 18.95. DeCoursey is the first Tennessee swimmer to go sub-19 in the 50 free, which he did at the SEC meet in February, capturing a silver medal. He is the fifth seeded swimmer in the 100 free at 41.71, which he set at SECs, finishing second.
Joey Reilman is the number three seed in the 200 backstroke, swimming the second fastest time in school history, 1:38.97 at the SEC meet and winning an SEC Championship in the event. Reilman will also swim as the fourth seed in the 200 freestyle at 1:32.35. The senior broke the school record at the SEC meet and finished second, earning a silver medal.
Colin Zeng, Will Hallam and Matthew Wade all qualified for NCAAs out the NCAA B Zone Diving Championships with Zeng and Hallam qualifying on all three events.
Zeng is the defending champion on platform and has two platform titles to his name winning last season and in 2016. The senior won the 3-meter and platform title last month at SECs.
Hallam finished fifth in the 1-meter at zones, scoring a 677.80 while scoring 677.55 points on the 3-meter board to place 11th. The sophomore was 11th in platform with 682.50 points.
Wade made NCAAs in one event, the 3-meter board on day two of NCAA Zones. The freshman scored 754.15 points to finish fifth.
Tennessee's representatives include: Braga Verhage, Josh Walsh, Matthew Dunphy, Michael Houlie, Nathan Murray, and Sam Rice.
The Vols finished 11th last season at the championships and will look to improve upon that this week in Austin. The men have had an NCAA Individual Champion at two of the last three NCAA meets and have claimed 44 individual and relay titles in program history.
