#7 Tennessee Run-Rules UTSA, 12-2, in Opening Game of Judi Garman Classic
February 28, 2019 | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif. – No. 7 Tennessee ran away with the lead early versus the UTSA Roadrunners, plating 10 runs in the third inning en route to a 12-2 victory in the Lady Vols' first game of the Judi Garman Classic on Thursday.
UT (14-2) was led at the plate by sophomore Amanda Ayala who went 3-for-3, scored a run and recorded a career-high five RBIs. She is the first Lady Vol to do so since Meghan Gregg notched five vs. Boise State on Feb. 8, 2018.
Senior right-hander Matty Moss got the starting nod in the circle, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out five to record her fourth win of the season. She has now thrown three complete games in 2019.
To lead off the first inning, Aubrey Leach singled back to the pitcher and advanced to third on a single to right by Ayala. She then came home on Ashley Morgan's sacrifice fly to give Tennessee a 1-0 advantage.
The Lady Vols dropped the anvil in the third, scratching across 10 runs on eight hits and an error as 14 batters saw time at the plate. After opening the frame with a one-bagger and walk, Ayala singled to center to driving in two runs. She then advanced to third on a fielding error by UTSA's second baseman that put runners on the corners for Ally Shipman. The Valencia, Calif., native hit an RBI-single into right field before back-to-back singles by Kaili Phillips and Gracie Osbron combined to drive in three runs. Leach then worked the count to draw a bases-loaded walk before Ayala made contact for the second time in the inning, hitting a bases-clearing double down the left field line.
Tennessee rounded out its scoring in the top of the fourth as Phillips crushed a ball over the center field wall to make it 12-0.
In the bottom of the frame, UTSA scored its only runs of the game on two hits. The Roadrunners had a player reach on a single with one out and then a two-RBI long ball by Kindell Brooks made it a 12-2 ballgame.
NOTES:
RBIs FOR AYALA: Amanda Ayala is the only Lady Vol to record five RBIs in a game so far this season. She is tied for the team lead with six multiple RBI games and owns a 16-game reached base streak. Her 21 runs batted in on the season are tops on the squad.
ON DECK: Tennessee takes on Fresno State tonight at 8 p.m. ET. Live stats for the game will be available on the Tennessee softball schedule page on UTSports.com. The game will also be broadcast online by FloSoftball.
