Tennessee Completes Road Trip with 4-2 Win at Georgia Tech
February 24, 2019 | Men's Tennis
ATLANTA – Junior Scott Jones clinched the match with a three-set comeback victory at the No. 3 position to lead the No. 15/26-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team to a 4-2 win over Georgia Tech on Sunday at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex.
After dropping the doubles point to start the day, the Vols didn't flinch and showed toughness in fighting back to take four points in singles competition – where four of six matches went to three sets.
"The most important thing is we won," assistant coach James McKie said. "I didn't think we played our best, but got the win on the road against another good ACC team. We are very proud of Scotty (Jones) for coming up with the clinching point.
"We will focus on getting some things right on the practice court this week. We have a big week ahead at home with MTSU on Wednesday and opening SEC competition against Georgia on Friday night."
Tennessee improved to 8-1 on the season, while Georgia Tech dropped to 5-4 and suffered its first loss at home. The Vols completed a road trip sweep after defeating NC State, 4-1, in Raleigh, N.C. on Friday night, as well.
Sophomore Adam Walton, ranked No. 94, won his seventh consecutive singles match in quick order over Phillip Gresk, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot to be the first Vol off the court and even the score at 1-1.
Redshirt senior Preston Touliatos defeated Chris Yun, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) on court four, while sophomore Andrew Rogers grabbed a three-set win over Jospeh Gandolfo, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the No. 6 position.
Junior Luca Wiedenmann fell to No. 106 Cole Gromley, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 on court five.
Jones sealed the win by battling back against Andrew Li to win, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5.
No. 113 Timo Stodder's match against No. 36 Carlos Divar on the No. 1 court was unfinished in the third set when Jones clinched the victory.
SERIES HISTORY: The Vols improved to 24-16 against Georgia Tech all-time with the series dating back to 1927.
UP NEXT: The Vols host MTSU on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Goodfriend Tennis Center before welcoming Georgia at 6 p.m. on Friday in the SEC season-opener.
