With the help of even par rounds from Waverly Whiston and Micheala Williams, the Lady Vols pass No. 25 Ohio State and gain strokes on the field
NASSAU, Bahamas – In the second round of the White Sands Invitational on Tuesday, the Tennessee women's golf team moved up the leaderboard.
The Lady Vols second round 292 (+5) helped them leap No. 25 Ohio State on the team leaderboard. They also gaining strokes on No. 21 Mississippi State, No. 27 Baylor and No. 31 Clemson who sit right in front of them entering the final round of play.
Their second round shaved four strokes off their opening round score as senior Micheala Williams and junior Waverly Whiston carded even par rounds to lead the way.
They were two of four Tennessee players who made a move up the leaderboard on Tuesday.
Whiston's second round boosted her into the top 25 on the individual leaderboard as she is tied for 22nd with 18 holes remaining in the competition. After a slow start to her second round, Whiston quickly turned her day around with four birdies over an eight-hole stretch, helping her to her third round of par or better of the season.
Williams, who joined Whiston at even par for her second round, jumped 20 spots on the individual leaderboard as she parred 16 of the 18 holes on Tuesday.
With the help of the two upperclassmen's scores, the Lady Vols enter the final round of the competition just six strokes out of the top five on the leaderboard. It would be the team's third top-5 finish of the fall season.
Tennessee, who sits in 10th as a team, is scheduled to tee off the third round Wednesday at 8 a.m. ET between holes No. 10 and 13. The Lady Vols will be paired with SMU (+17) and Tulane (+18) who are 11th and 12th, respectively.
Coach's Take
On the even par rounds from Waverly Whiston and Micheala Williams:
"We needed a good round today and it was good to see Micheala bounce back after a tough day yesterday. Waverly had almost an identical round going, but today finished it off really well." – Coach Judi Pavon
On similar traits in Waverly Whiston and Nicole Whiston's games:
"Both Waverly and Nicole really fight for their rounds. They want to play well and do a good job of keeping it together even if they aren't feeling their best. They are great team players for us." -- Coach Judi Pavon
On improving the team score by four strokes on Tuesday:
"The conditions were tougher today, so it was good to have a better round. We talked about being more committed before they hit a shot or a putt and they tried to be more aware of that today. We are doing a lot of good things during our rounds, but just can't quite break through."– Coach Judi Pavon
