Lady Vols Close Fall Slate with Doubleheader
October 24, 2019 | Softball
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee softball will close its eight-game 2019 Fall Ball season on Sunday with an afternoon doubleheader at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Lady Vols face Western Kentucky to open the day at 1 p.m. (ET), before concluding the afternoon and season with Tusculum at 3:30 p.m.
Admission is free and gates will open to the public beginning one hour prior to each game of the day. Normal concession stands will not be open; however, fans will be allowed and are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks (alcohol is not permitted).
UT hopes to recover from a 1-1 weekend, falling to UAB 4-3 in a 10-inning outing on Sunday after a 2-0 win over Tennessee Tech Saturday.
Through seven all-time meetings with the Lady Toppers in regular season play, the Lady Vols have won five, but have lost the last two of the series in 2014 (3-2) and 2015 (2-0) when the Lady Vols were ranked third and 14th, respectively.
The Orange and White have never faced the Pioneers in regular season play, but the Tusculum program was an NAIA contender in the 1980s. The program has an 1011-772-2 (.567) all-time record and went 22-20 last season.
Looking Forward to 2020
To culminate the fall season and shift focus to the 2020 spring, which will mark the program's 25th year in extant, co-head coaches Ralph Weekly and Karen Weekly will host a press conference on Monday, Oct. 28 at 11:30 a.m. (ET) in the Ray and Lucy Hand Digital Studio ahead of football head coach Jeremy Pruitt's Monday presser.
The Lady Vols return ace Ashley Rogers who finished 2019 with a 1.94 ERA and 21-7 record in the circle and the bulk of its offensive fire power. Despite the loss of All-American Aubrey Leach who was the lone player to start all 60 games, UT is poised for a strong season at the plate bringing back 70 percent of its scoring and eight starters.
UT's freshman class come into the 2020 year ranked the sixth-best recruiting class by Softball America.
Last season, the Lady Vols finished 43-17 and were one-run shy of returning to the Women's College World Series after a closely-contested showing with the Florida Gators in the Gainesville Super Regional. The Lady Vols forced a rubber match into extra-innings before the Gators singled for the walk-off win.
