The Vols Finish Third at Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate
October 13, 2019 | Men's Golf
Spencer Cross finishes the tournament as the only player in the field to have a round in the 60s all three days
JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's golf team ended the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in third on Sunday.
Â
The Vols carded a season-best 54-hole score of 837 (-27) with three players finishing 5-under-par or better in the tournament.
Â
It marks the fourth tournament score since 2011 that has been 837 or lower and the second consecutive season Tennessee has shot 27-under or better in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Â
Junior Spencer Cross was the low Vol player on the leaderboard as he finished inside of the top five for the second time this week. The Sevierville, Tennessee native was the only player to shoot all three rounds in the 60s this week.
Â
In the final round, Cross turned in his best round of the week and the low round for Tennessee on Sunday with a 67 (-5) to cement a fourth place finish in the 87-player field. He closed out the day without a bogey and carded four of his five birdies on the opening nine.
Â
That quick start helped the Vols to a two-stroke lead at the turn, but ultimately were passed by tournament champions Louisville and host East Tennessee State in the final nine holes of the competition.
Â
This marks the third consecutive tournament this fall that Tennessee has placed third or higher.
Â
Joining Cross in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard was redshirt junior Hunter Wolcott who picked up his second top-10 finish of the week after tying for second at the Intercollegiate at the Grove.
Â
After being tied with Cross entering the final round, Wolcott turned in a final round 72 (E) to tie for 10th at 7-under-par for the tournament.
Â
Senior Rhys Nevin was the third player inside of the top 20 on the leaderboard, tying for 18th at 5-under-par for the tournament. Nevin carded a third round 70 (-2) to jump up eight spots on the leaderboard.
