Tennessee closes out its fall schedule in Alpharetta, Ga. as one of eight top-25 teams in the field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – For the fifth and final event of the fall season, the University of Tennessee men's golf team travels to play in the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational, which is set to start on Friday.
The field features 14 teams with the Vols entering as one of eight top-25 teams, according the latest rankings published by Golfweek. Tennessee enters at the No. 23 team in the rankings and the Vols and Texas A&M are the lone SEC representatives in the field.
In the last three tournaments, Tennessee has finished inside of the top three including a win at the Intercollegiate at the Grove, capturing the title by 16-strokes. The Vols are coming off a third place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate where they shot 27-under-par.
This included a season-low round of 273 (-15) in the opening round of the tournament. UT followed that up with its second lowest round of the season, shooting 279 (-9) in the round two.
In the first installment of the Golfstat rankings, the Vols had two players rank inside of the top 100 individually with a third inside of the top 250. Junior Spencer Cross enters the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational as the top Tennessee player on the list, ranking No. 68 in the nation.
Cross has played in all 11 rounds in the lineup this season and sports a 71.27 stroke average. Last week, he picked up two top-5 finishes as he tied for fourth at the Intercollegiate at the Grove while placing alone in fourth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Senior Rhys Nevin, who has been atop the Vols lineup to start every event this season, comes in at No. 72 in the Golfstat rankings. He has placed inside of the top 20 in all four events this season with under-par-rounds in the last four rounds, entering the final tournament of the fall.
Friday's first round is scheduled for a start at 9 a.m. (ET) with redshirt freshman Bryce Lewis being the first Vol to tee off No. 1. The Vols will be paired with host TCU and Virginia on the opening day of play.
The Vols' Lineup
Rhys Nevin
Nevin has placed inside of the top 20 in all four events this season and is one of five Vols players to have a scoring average below 72.00. The Cheshire, England native is coming off an 18th place finish at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Spencer Cross
Cross is coming off back-to-back top-5 finishes at the Intercollegiate at the Grove and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. He is the Tennessee leader in rounds of par or better with eight while also having a team-best four rounds in the 60s this season.
Chip Thomas
Thomas enters the final tournament in the fall as the third on the team in rounds counted. The redshirt junior has counted in 9.5 of the 11 rounds this season (86.36 percent). He is tied for second on the team with two rounds in the 60s this season.
Hunter Wolcott
The Burns, Tennessee native is coming off back-to-back top-10 finishes last week including a runner-up finish at the Intercollegiate at the Grove. He comes into the final tournament of the fall as one of three Vols to rank in the top-250 in the Golfstat rankings.
Bryce Lewis
The redshirt freshman makes his first appearance in the lineup in his collegiate career. So far this season, Lewis owns a 71.64 scoring average with seven rounds of par or better. He has a pair of top-15 finishes at the JT Poston (T-13) and the Intercollegiate at the Grove (T-13).
