TRACK & FIELD CENTRAL: Carolina Challenge/Camel City Invite

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Following an 11-day break from competition, the Tennessee track & field program returns to action this weekend at the Carolina Challenge in Columbia, S.C. The meet runs Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 31 - Feb. 2 at South Carolina's Indoor Track & Field Complex.

Additionally, UT senior captain Zach Long will compete at the Camel City Elite Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Rutledge, Tenn. native will run alongside premier collegiate and professional talent in the men's elite 3000m, aiming to improve upon his school-record mark of 7:59.15. The event is scheduled for a 2:20 p.m. start on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the JDL Fast Track.

The Carolina Challenge will begin Thursday at 10 a.m. with the women's pentathlon 60m hurdles, as UT sophomore Kiara Rhodes will make her multi-event season debut. Other pentathlon events include the high jump, shot put, long jump and 800m - ultimately wrapping up Thursday at 4:45 p.m.

Action from South Carolina will run all day Friday and Saturday, concluding with the invite women's 4x400m relay at 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon. As of Monday, Jan. 28, 48 teams have registered more than 1,500 athletes to compete at the Carolina Challenge.

LAST TIME OUT: The Vols last competed at the Hokie Invitational at Virginia Tech, totaling six event wins, 22 podium finishes and 31 NCAA Indoor personal-best marks across the two-day meet. 11 athletes combined for 12 top-10 marks in program history, highlighted by a school-record performance from LaChyna Roe in the women's triple jump - recording a distance of 13.28m (43-7) in Blacksburg.

NCAA's APPROACHING: With postseason meets on the horizon, seven Vols find themselves in the top-16 of their respective events among NCAA Division I athletes this season. The top-16 in each event at the end of indoor season will qualify for the NCAA National Championships, scheduled for March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
RANKINGS UPDATE: In the most recent installment of the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings, Tennessee was tabbed 16th and 27th on the women's and men's sides, respectively. The Vols are one of 18 NCAA Division I programs to have both teams ranked inside the top 30.

UP NEXT: Next week, the Big Orange will travel to Clemson, S.C. for its final regular season competition, the Tiger Paw Invitational. The meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9 at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex.
