KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee swimming and diving program opens the 2018-19 season Friday afternoon with the annual Orange and White Intrasquad Meet at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
The meet begins at 3:30 p.m. Like all regular-season home meets this season, admission is free. Please note the clear bag policy for the venue.
This is the seventh year of the men's and women's combined scoring Orange and White Meet. The series is tied 3-3 thanks to the White team winning the last two years. The White team earned a 521.5-390.5 victory last season, thanks to three-win days for Tess Cieplucha and Taylor Abbott.
Abbott has been a star for the White team his first two years, having swept the 1,000-yard freestyle, 500 freestyle and 200 butterfly as a freshman and sophomore.
The Vols' intrasquad meet is different than most scrimmages because swimmers and divers are selected to either the Orange or White team as freshmen and remain on that team for the rest of their career.
LAST YEAR: Tennessee returns a number of big scorers from last year's postseason teams. The Lady Vols finished third in the SEC and surged back into the top 10 at NCAAs, taking seventh nationally. The team was powered by a returning core of juniors in Erika Brown, Meghan Small, Tess Cieplucha and Stanzi Moseley. Brown was part of a record six SEC championships, including three individual titles: the 50-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
On the men's side, the Vols are coming off a fourth-place SEC and 11th-place NCAA finish. Zhipeng (Colin) Zeng enters his senior year as the reigning CSCAA Diver of the Year and NCAA platform champion, leading the way on the podium for the Vols. Tennessee set six program records last season with fellow senior Kyle DeCoursey notably assuming control of the 50 freestyle record (19.12 seconds).
