September 23, 2018 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee striker Bunny Shaw scored the game-winner in the 87th minute to lift the 19th-ranked Volunteers past Mississippi State 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Regal Soccer Stadium.
On her fifth shot of the match, Shaw broke through with a rolling ball past the Mississippi State keeper into the bottom left corner. The goal was assisted by sophomore defender Wrenne French, who found Shaw in the box after a clearance from the Bulldogs (8-2, 1-2 SEC).
The Vols (8-1-1, 2-1 SEC) earned the win behind their second-straight SEC shutout, as goalkeeper Shae Yanez logged her sixth clean sheet of the year and lowered her goals-against average to a conference-best 0.30. The senior from Downingtown, Pa. hauled in a season-high tying six saves, including a stop on a potential equalizer with four seconds left on the game clock.
In UT's most physical match of the season, Tennessee outshot Mississippi State 15-10 with a 10-5 advantage over the final 45 minutes. Shaw's five attempts led all players, while MSU midfielder Zakirah McGillivary fired three shots on target to lead the Bulldogs.
For the 10th consecutive outing, the Vols held the edge in corner kicks at 7-1. Fouls were 10-8 in favor of Mississippi State.
