#19 Vols Top Rebels 2-0 in Oxford for First SEC Win

OXFORD, Miss. – Tennessee seniors Bunny Shaw and Meghan Flynn each found the back of the net as the 19th-ranked Vols defeated the Ole Miss Rebels 2-0 Thursday night at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
Senior keeper Shae Yanez logged her fifth solo shutout of the season, hauling in a season-high six saves against the Rebels. The Downingtown, Pa. native also lowered her goals-against average to a 0.33 on the year.
Shaw recorded the opening tally in the 22nd minute to put the Vols ahead 1-0 early in the match. The forward from Spanish Town, Jamaica converted from six yards off a deflected shot by Erin Gilroy, who was credited with her first assist of the season.
Flynn gave Tennessee (7-1-1, 1-1-0 SEC) a 2-0 cushion late in the match, connecting on a laser shot from the left side in the 87th minute. Danielle Marcano assisted the goal on a flicked pass to the upper left corner of the box.
The Vols made their presence felt in the first half, outshooting the Rebels 12-2 with an 8-0 edge in corner kicks over the opening 45 minutes. Shaw attempted four shots in the first period with three on goal to lead all players.
Ole Miss (7-4-0, 1-1-0 SEC) registered 11 shots in the second half, compared to seven for UT in the final 45 minutes. Rebel forward Channing Foster led the charge with four shot attempts for the match.
Tennessee returns home Sunday, Sept. 23 for another SEC matchup against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Regal Soccer Stadium, and the match will be aired on SEC Network.
