Marcano's Brace Lifts #10 Vols Past Skyhawks
September 02, 2018 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Senior forward Danielle Marcano netted a pair of goals as No. 10 Tennessee topped UT Martin 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Regal Soccer Stadium. The Vols improved to 5-0-1 on the season with their fifth-straight home shutout.
Tennessee tallied early courtesy of a header goal from Marcano in the ninth minute, assisted by a corner kick from Katie Cousins. It was the first goal of the season for the forward from Buford, Ga.
Marcano made it her third-career brace in the 63rd minute off a header assist from Anna Bialczak. Taking the ball near the top of the box, Marcano dodged UTM goalkeeper Erica Myers and tapped a shot inside the right post of an open goal.
In a half played mostly between the boxes, the Skyhawks (3-2-0) held a slight 5-3 advantage in shot attempts over the first 45 minutes. It was the first time this season that the Vols had been outshot in a half at Regal Soccer Stadium.
Tennessee fired four shots in the first 30 seconds of the second period, and the Vols went on to outshoot the Skyhawks 19-4 over the final 45 minutes. The +15 shot advantage was the highest disparity in a half for UT this season.
Tennessee's five home shutouts to open the season ties a program record set in 2015. UT goalie Shae Yanez has logged 446 consecutive minutes of scoreless keeping at Regal Soccer Stadium, lowering her goals-against average to 0.16 on the season.
UP NEXT: Tennessee hits the road next week for back-to-back in-state matchups at ETSU (Sept. 6) and Tennessee Tech (Sept. 9). The Vols return home Sunday, Sept. 16 for their SEC opener against the South Carolina Gamecocks.
