DAYTON, Ohio -- The University of Tennessee volleyball team recorded its fifth sweep of the season against University of Evansville to close out the Flyer Invitational.
The Lady Vols, led by double-digit kills from junior Tessa Grubbs and freshman Raquel Perinar, jumped out to an early cushion in the first frame. Tennessee never trailed, leading by as much as 13 points in the set.
Junior setter Sedona Hansen even jumped into the kill column, tallying three of the 12 kills including the set clincher. Hansen tied her career-high with five kills in the match.
They also held the Purple Aces offense in check as by the end of 25-14 first set Evansville had hit .000 which included eight attack errors.
Late runs from Tennessee in the second and third frames helped it capture its second win of the weekend and ninth on the season.
From Coach Rackham:
On bouncing back from last night with two wins:
"I like the way the team responded. We talked last night after the match the areas we needed to address and change. I think we did some of that this morning and this afternoon. I think it was a total team effort which was nice to see. We had good positive performances across the board. Anytime you have a tough loss, you get concerned with how that effect your team. I thought we rebounded really nicely." - Coach Eve Rackham
On winning the second match of the day:
"I asked the girls to take some personal responsibility and accountability in that match. I knew both teams would be tired. Evansville had to play back-to-back and we played this morning. Those matches are tough on both teams and it's really about whoever comes out and executes." - Coach Eve Rackham
From Erica Treiber:
On coming out of Saturday with two wins:
"Mentally, we weren't satisfied with how Friday night ended. We knew we had some things to address but, really we needed to focus everything mentally and physically to make everything as clean as we could. That showed for the two matches that we had today. We came out and we worked. We knew they weren't going to be easy but, we came out with a lot of energy and stuck through them." - Erica Treiber
Standout Stat:
The Lady Vols open up Southeastern Conference play on Friday when Tennessee travels to Auburn. The Lady Vols hold a record of 30-20-1 all-time against the Tigers.
The match will air on SEC Network+ with the first serve scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (ET) in Auburn, Ala.
