Tennessee hits .400 for second straight match defeating the Tigers in four sets
AUBURN, Ala. -- The University of Tennessee volleyball team opened up Southeastern Conference with a four-set road victory over Auburn.
After dropping the opening set of the match 25-22, the Lady Vols took control of the match in the second set. Tennessee started the set on a 6-1 run and never looked back, running away with the second frame 25-12 helping set the tone for the rest of the match.
Auburn was held to just a .053 hitting percentage over the final three sets while the Lady Vols had three players with 12-plus kills. As a team, Tennessee hit over .400 for the second-straight match, hitting over .320 in each of the four frames.
Tennessee finished with a season-high hitting percentage of .404 converting 70 kills on 141 swings. The team got production from each position in the front row. Junior Tessa Grubbs on the left side led the Lady Vols with a game-high 17 kills while hitting .414 while fellow junior Alyssa Andreno tallied a season-high 12 kills on the right side, hitting at a .550 clip.
In the middle, sophomore Addisyn Rowe and senior Erica Treiber combined for 22 kills, committing just two errors combined in the victory.
With the win, the Lady Vols improve to 31-20-1 all-time vs. Auburn and claim their 10th win of the 2018 campaign.
From Coach Rackham:
On hitting over .400 in the last two matches:
"It says a lot about how we are passing combined with how we are setting. We have hitters across the board who can score. It is just a matter of getting them the ball. The better you pass the more options you are going to have. Our setters are doing a nice job of distributing the ball and our middles are doing a nice jo of being available." – Coach Eve Rackham
On having the production of the right side tonight:
"It was huge. We have been talking about it all season. Alyssa had a really nice week in practice and is getting healthier week-by-week. It was certainly huge having her tonight." Coach Eve Rackham
From Alyssa Andreno:
On how the team felt offensively:
"Offensively, we just clicked. We passed great and the setters really spread the ball around, putting all of our hitters in great situations. We really got in a good flow especially after that first set where it was a little bit choppy. After we figured our passing out, everything flowed very well." – Alyssa Andreno
On how much the floor opens when the middles and both pins are attacking well:
"It really opens up the floor. As soon as our middle and outsides got going, I was basically one-on-one every single time which really opens up the court. You can hit line, cross and we can tip balls. Just being able to spread balls around, it gives each of our positions a chance to really score" – Alyssa Andreno
Standout Stat:
Tennessee returns home to Thompson-Boling arena for the first time since Sept. 1 opening up its SEC home slate against No. 20 Kentucky. This season the Lady Vols are perfect at home with a record of 6-0 including a win over No. 22 Michigan State to open the season.
First serves is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (ET) with the tilt against the Wildcats airing on SEC Network.
