Tennessee captures second win over a Big Ten team this season
DAYTON, Ohio -- The University of Tennessee volleyball team bounced back in the Dayton Flyer Invitational with a four set victory over Ohio State Saturday.
At 16-16 in the fourth set, senior Erica Treiber nearly single handily finished off the Buckeyes. The middle hitter found the floor for her 12 kill of the match on a slide giving the Lady Vols a 17-16 advantage.
This put the Unionville, Mich. Native back on the service stripe where she would remain the rest of the match. After a match-high 15th kill from junior Tessa Grubbs and four consecutive hitting errors by Ohio State, the score stood at 22-16 in favor of Tennessee.
Treiber would finish off the Buckeyes, who entered the match 9-1, with three consecutive aces. Her four in the match tied her career-high which she set last night in the loss to Dayton.
The Lady Vols move to 2-0 against Big Ten opponents this season after opening the year with a four-set win over No. 22 Michigan State.
From Coach Rackham
On beating Ohio State
"We treat every match like it is the biggest match of the season. We have a single match focus. So whoever we played this morning, we needed to have our best effort. Beating Ohio State is good because they play in a good conference and they have had a nice season already. Hopefully, it gives our team some confidence going forward." - Coach Eve Rackham
From Erica Treiber:
On serving the last points of the match:
"When I went back there, it was like any other point in the game. I wasn't even aware of the score at the time and I was just focusing on the standards and techniques we do in practice. I just wanted to serve it to be clean, flat and deep. I wasn't trying to serve them off the court." - Erica Treiber
On the mentality on the service line all weekend:
"I was just feeling good. I was coming off of a couple service errors the last few games. I really wanted to change my focus and mentality to be confident." - Erica Treiber
Standout Stat:
The Lady Vols close out the Flyer Invitational with a matchup against Evansville University at 4:30 p.m. (ET). The Aces dropped their Friday night match against Ohio State in four sets.
