Lady Vols drop five setter to Dayton

Grubbs finished with a team-high 23 kills in the loss to the Flyers
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Tennessee volleyball team dropped just its third match of the season Friday night against the University of Dayton in the Flyer Invitational.
After rallying to send the match to a fifth set, the Lady Vols fell in a tightly contested 15-13 set to the host Flyers.
After dropping the opening set, head coach Eve Rackham inserted senior Brooke Schumacher, junior Alyssa Andreno and junior Asha Phillips into the lineup.
That along with eight kills of the left pin from junior Tessa Grubbs helped Tennessee claim the second set 25-20 heading into the break.
Dayton took a closely contest third set before the Lady Vols offense carried them to a 25-15 fourth set victory. In the set, Tennessee hit .500 converting 17 kills on 28 swings.
Grubbs nearly had another career night, finishing with 23 kills while hitting at a .388 clip on the left pin. Senior Erica Treiber and redshirt junior Breana Jeter both finished with double-digit kills in the loss.

The Lady Vols wrap up the Dayton Flyer Invitational tomorrow with a pair of games. The first comes at 10:30 a.m. (ET) when Tennessee plays Ohio State with a 4:30 p.m. (ET) match against Evansville closing out the weekend.

- Junior setter Sedona Hansen is now ninth all-time in career assists. She needed 16 to tie Kelsey Mahoney for ninth and she doubled that posting a season-high 32 assists. She also racked up 11 digs which was a team-high for her third double-double performance of the season.
- Treiber finished with a team-high four blocks in the match. She is now 20 away from tying two-time All-American Kristen Andre for fifth on the all-time blocks list at 436.
- Jeter reach double-digit kills for the first time this season, finishing with a season-high 10 to go along with three blocks.
- With 23 kills in the match, Grubbs now has passed the 650 kill benchmark and has 664 in her three-year career at Tennessee. 23 kills also ties her second highest amount of kills in her career.
