No. 25 Vols Top Red Storm 2-0 in Season Opener

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 25 Tennessee Volunteers opened the regular season with a 2-0 win over St. John's Thursday evening at Regal Stadium. Senior Tennessee goalkeeper Shae Yanez collected the first shutout of the season with two saves over 90 minutes.
Freshman forward Amy Thompson broke through for the first goal of 2018 in the 72nd minute, with an open-net shot from five yards out inside the right post. The score was assisted by senior striker Bunny Shaw and junior striker Salera Jordan.
Junior forward MA Vignola increased Tennessee's lead in the 84th minute after dribbling inside the box between the defenders and shooting a rocket into the back of the net, unassisted, giving UT a 2-0 lead.
In the first half, the Vols were inches away from scoring after Vignola took a strong shot from outside the box, rattling the crossbar and bouncing back out to keep it scoreless.
The Volunteers also collected seven shots, two on goal, compared to two for St. John's. Jordan led Tennessee with two shots.
During the second half, Tennessee added six more shots and tallied 13 overall compared to the Red Storm's seven. Additionally, the Vols had six corner kicks and held St. John's to zero.
