No. 25 Vols run past George Mason 4-0
August 19, 2018 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Four different players scored a goal for No. 25 Tennessee as the Vols downed George Mason 4-0 Sunday night at Regal Stadium.
Freshman forward Amy Thompson struck first once again for the Volunteers (2-0) in the 27th minute, as she dribbled around two defenders and rocketed a goal to the upper right of the net. The score was assisted by senior defender Mackenzie Gouner after a long pass from the midline.
Redshirt junior Salera Jordan stretched the lead to 2-0 for the Volunteers only two minutes later. Following a throw-in from MA Vignola, Danielle Marcano took the ball into the box and fired a shot from point blank range. GMU goalie Morgan Symmers blocked the shot, but Jordan was there to knock the rebound into the back of the net.
Tennessee netted its third goal in the 56th minute, when Vignola shot a cross to the center of the box that rebounded off of Anna Bialczak. The ball deflected to senior Rylie O'Keefe, which she drove into the left side of the goal from 10 yards out for her first goal of the season.
Erin Gilroy tallied the fourth score in the 71st minute off a through ball from Claire Franks. Gilroy dribbled to the right of the goalpost and shot a line drive that netted in the bottom left corner. Gilroy made her season debut Sunday night following her stint with Team USA at the U-20 Women's World Cup in France.
Senior goalkeeper Shae Yanez posted her second-straight solo shutout for the Vols. The Tennessee backline allowed just four shots on the night, none of them on goal.
UT kept offensive momentum for a majority of the contest, outshooting the Patriots 20-4 and holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
UP NEXT: Tennessee will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face Wake Forest on Thursday, Aug. 23. UT's first road match of the season is slated for 7 p.m.
