July 26, 2018 | Track & Field
NEW ORLEANS — The Tennessee men's and women's track and field teams and nine individuals were honored by the USTFCCCA for their academic performances in 2017-18, the coaches association announced Thursday.
Both teams were named USTFCCCA All-Academic Teams by posting a GPA above 3.0.
Vols who earned USTFCCCA All-Academic honors included: Malik Elion (kinesiology), Joseph Maxwell (marketing), Seth Whitener (business analytics), and Matthew Zajac (supply chain management) for the men and Tamia Crockett (biological sciences), Lenysse Dyer (psychology), Hannah Jefcoat (sport management), Maia McCoy (communication studies) and Layla White (sociology).
Dyer and McCoy put together their best years on the track for the Lady Vols, earning All-America status in addition to their success in the classroom.
Dyer qualified individually for the NCAA outdoor championships final site for the first time in her career, doing so in the 400 meters. She earned second-team All-America honors as a member of relay teams during the indoor and outdoor season.
McCoy also reached her first NCAA championship in an individual event, earning a spot in the 200m. She was a second-team All-American as the anchor leg on the 4x100m relay team, which placed ninth.
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and excelled in either the indoor or outdoor season. For indoor season consideration, the student-athlete must have been ranked in the top 96 in an individual event or 48 in a relay. For outdoor qualification, the student-athlete must have competed in at least the NCAA preliminary rounds.
