Historic Relay Highlights Tennessee Relays' Final Day
April 14, 2018 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The final day of the 51st Tennessee Relays saw a fastest time in the world for 2018, a Tom Black Track record and two Vol wins to close out the event Saturday.
The day was highlighted by the 4x100-meter relay, in which America's Team sponsored by Pro Form Sports, made up of UT track legends Christian Coleman and Justin Gatlin, as well as sprinters Ronnie Baker and Mike Rodgers, won the event with a time of 38.08 seconds.
The time marked the fastest time in the world this year in the 4x100m relay, and broke a 18-year old Tennessee Relay record and 23-year old Tom Black Track record.
Tennessee's 4x100m team of Elijah Miller, Mustaqeem Williams, Kwantreyl McConico and Nathan Strother took third in the event with a time of 39.71.
The Vols began the day with a win in the 4x200m relay, as a team of McConico, Williams, Strother and Darryl Harris took first with a time of 1:23.29.
Tennessee found success on the women's side of the 4x100 and 4x200m relays as well, taking second-place finishes in both. The team of Lenysse Dyer, Shania Collins, Felecia Majors and Maia McCoy ran in both events.
Tennessee's second win of the day came from LaChyna Roe in the women's triple jump. The junior tallied a jump of 13.26m (43-6) to lead the pack, while senior Cidae'a Woods came in fourth with a 12.93m jump (42-5.25).
Roe's jump would have eclipsed the school record, but was not wind legal (+3.1). Woods' jump was her personal-best mark and the second-best triple jump in program history.
Continuing their success in the women's field events, the Vols achieved two top-four finishes in the discus throw. Stamatia Scarvelis came in third with a throw of 51.94m (170-5), while Tamia Crockett took fourth with a throw of 50.36m (165-2).
To begin the meet, Tennessee honored eight seniors on the team: Shania Collins, Felecia Majors and Cidae'a Woods on the women's side, and Scott Cousino, Malik Elion, Drew Kelley, Nathan Strother and Matthew Zajak for the men. Christian Coleman was presented with the Ed Murphey Award, given to the most outstanding men's track and field athlete each season. Zach Long was presented with the Chuck Rohe Leadership Award, given to the student-athlete who consistently displays outstanding leadership.
