COLUMBIA, Tenn. -- Senior Meghan Gregg hit her 51st career home run to tie the all-time record at Tennessee and lead the No. 10/12 Lady Vols to a 8-0 victory over Memphis on Tuesday night at Ridley Sports Complex.Â
In front of a sold out crowd, the Lady Vols (34-8) were able to regain their stride offensively and shut down the Tigers (29-11) in the Mid-State Classic. With the victory, UT improves to 123-3 against teams from the state of Tennessee and 89-0 in such games under Ralph and Karen Weekly.Â
UT got on the board early with two runs in the first inning. Gregg started it off by driving a single to right center field on a 0-2 pitch that scored Aubrey Leach. She was then advanced to third as Chelsea Seggern followed up with a double down the left field line. Scarlet McSwain then lifted a fly ball to center field that allowed Gregg to tag up from third for the second run.
In the fourth, Tennessee got a pair of runners on base with two outs as Leach hit a bunt single and Jenna Holcomb drew a walk. Gregg then stepped in and knocked a three-run home run over the right field fence to put herself alongside Tonya Callahan as the program's all-time leader and the Lady Vols increased their lead to 5-0. The senior finished 2-for-4 with four RBI's on the night.Â
The Big Orange reached the eight-run mark with three more scores in the fifth inning. The Lady Vols strung together three consecutive singles with no outs, and Abby Lockman drew a walk to bring in Scarlet McSwain. Holcomb then drove a RBI single to shortstop that allowed Treasury Poindexter to come home from third, and Lockman scored shortly after on a fielding error.Â
Caylan Arnold went 4.1 innings for the Lady Vols to improve to 15-4 for the season. The sophomore recorded four strikeouts while giving up four hits.Â
UP NEXT: The Lady Vols return to SEC action this weekend when they host No. 14/14 LSU for a three-game series at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. Game 1 will take place on Friday, April 13 at 6 p.m.
