HONOLULU – Tennessee softball picked up win number 27 on Thursday, defeating North Dakota 14-2 in the Bank of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Tennessee (27-1) scored four runs in the top of the first. Meghan Gregg hit a three-run home run over the wall in right center to score Aubrey Leach and Jenna Holcomb. The Lady Vols added another run on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Morgan to center field that scored Brooke Vines.
UT plated one run in the top of the second when Leach grounded out to the second baseman to score CJ McClain.
North Dakota (14-14) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when Mary Martin scored on the fielder's choice by Victoria Minor.
Tennessee added two more runs in the top of the third. Abby Lockman hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to score Amanda Ayala to push UT's lead to 7-1.
The Lady Vols scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Chelsea Seggern doubled down the right-field line to score Leach. In the next at-bat, Vines singled through the right side to score Gregg.
The Fighting Hawks added one run in the bottom of the fifth. Angel Love reached on a fielding error that scored Jailene Carpio.
Tennessee plated five runs in the top of the sixth. Seggern's sacrifice fly to center scored Holcomb. Four batters later, Lockman hit her second career grand slam, driving in Vines, Ayala and Haley Bearden.
Gabby Sprang (3-0) picked up the win, going four innings with a strikeout and just one run allowed. Matty Moss tossed two innings in relief with three strikeouts.
Up next: Tennessee will close out the day against host Hawai'i at 1 a.m. ET.
