Vols Open SEC Indoor Championships
February 24, 2018 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Tennessee scored in a pair of early finals and four runners advanced to finals Saturday to begin competition at the 2018 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium.
Junior Stamatia Scarvelis opened up Tennessee's scoring with a fourth-place finish in shot put. Her fourth throw, her first of the finals, was her best and was good for 16.63 meters (54 feet, 6.75 inches). It was her second-best result of the season, having set the school record at 17.77 earlier this month.
On the men's side, junior Zach Long finished sixth in the 3,000 meters to end the evening session for the Vols, clocking a time of 8 minutes, 3.92 seconds, the second-fastest time in his career.
Four runners will return with scoring opportunities in Sunday's finals after scoring top-eight finishes in their respective preliminaries Saturday.
Senior Nathan Strother, who broke the Vols' 400-meter record earlier this month, clocked the second-fastest 400 preliminary time in 45.79.
Junior Mustaqeem Williams qualified for the pair of sprint finals. He will be seeded third in the 200m (20.68) and eighth in the 60m (6.74). He will be joined in the 200 final by fellow junior Kwantreyl McConico, who has the eighth seed in 20.98.
Junior Lenysse Dyer earned the eighth and final qualifying spot in the women's 400m (53.56).
Though he finished outside the scoring in 11th, Georgios Korakidis lowered his own freshman record in the weight throw with a distance of 20.17m (66-2.75).
All three pentathlon competitors recorded career bests, led by sophomore Maya Neal's score of 3,814 points to finish ninth overall. She made her move up the standings in the long jump, the fourth event, recording the third-best jump of the field of 5.89m (19-4).
After a day of competition, Tennessee is 10th in both the men's meet (three points) and women's meet (five points). Florida leads the men's meet (30.5), and Arkansas is atop the women's leaderboard (41 points). The meet concludes Sunday.
TV INFORMATION: The SEC Network will broadcast Sunday's session live beginning at 6 p.m.

"I was very pleased with the efforts of Zach Long and Stamatia. Both put points on the board today. They had finals and took advantage of that and really competed well. I was proud of their competition. I think we did some things that set us up for tomorrow. Mustaqeem Williams did a great job coming back in both finals. Kwan McConico had been injured for a large part of the season. Making the SEC 200 final was a big deal. I was disappointed in our women on the sprint side of things. We didn't have anything happen there. Lenysse Dyer came though and had a nice run. I was glad to see her in the final. She's starting to show some promise of where she's been before. That was really encouraging. It was a nice breakthrough for Brooklynn Broadwater as well, but not quite enough to get into the final. I was disappointed in the outcome of some of our sprints. It was difficult to crack the code there. It's a difficult conference to get that all done.
"We've got some good stuff in the lineup tomorrow. We've got the weight throw for the women and the shot for the men, and we have some people really motivated there. We have some great opportunities in some of our other field events as well. We come back pretty strong in the men's 5,000 with Zach Long again. I'm thrilled. We still have a lot of growth as a program to go. We're really starting to get seasoned and starting to figure this out. I'm pleased with the efforts, but I'm feeling like we needed more from today."
