Vols Break Two Records to Open Outdoor Season
March 23, 2018 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES — Tennessee broke a pair of program throws records Friday to open the outdoor track and field season at the Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge.Â
Just two throwing events were contested on the first day, and junior Stamatia Scarvelis led the way for the Vols with a pair of victories in the women's competition.Â
Scarvelis first broke her own program record in the hammer throw by more than three meters with a mark of 68.37 meters (224-feet-3). The junior, competing in her home state of California, passed the record three times during her six attempts.Â
Later in the session, she won the discus competition with a career-best mark of 56.41m (185-1), which ranks fourth on Tennessee's all-time list.
In the men's competition, Georgios Korakidis demolished Tennessee's freshman record in the hammer throw by nearly four meters with a mark of 66.15m (217-0) to finish second.Â
Senior Matthew Zajac was the Vols' top finisher in the men's discus, taking third with a mark of 56.48m (185-3). He was also fifth in the hammer (62.62m; 205-5).Â
The Power 5 Trailblazer Challenge features the five major track and field programs — Tennessee, Southern California, Ole Miss, Miami and Ohio State — that are led by a woman. Through two scored events, the UT women lead with field with 22 points. Tennessee and Miami are tied with 18 points in the men's meet.Â
UP NEXT: The main session of the meet runs Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. Eastern (noon Pacific).Â
