Stodder, Touliatos Claim Birmingham Futures Crown
November 03, 2018 | Men's Tennis
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Tennessee senior co-captains Timo Stodder and Preston Touliatos captured the Birmingham F29 Futures doubles title Saturday afternoon at the Highland Park Tennis Center, as the duo capped off a 4-0 weekend with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over the American pair of Robert Kelly/Korey Lovett in the final.
Â
The Volunteer duo did not drop a set throughout their run through the 16-team bracket, notching victories over the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds as a wild card selection. It was the first professional title for Touliatos and Stodder as they picked up 18 ATP rankings points as a pair.
Â
Stodder (Berlin, Germany) also tallied six ATP points in singles, reaching the semifinals of the event's main draw for the first time in his career. The UT senior notably erased a 2-5 deficit in the second set to rally past the No. 7 seed Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi for a 6-2, 7-6(1) victory in the round of 16. He then clinched a semifinal berth with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Oscar Mesquida Berg, 6-3, 6-2.
Â
The Tennessee men's tennis program will wrap up the fall schedule this week at the Knoxville Challenger, hosted from Nov. 4-11 at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. Stodder and Touliatos have each received wild card selections in the main draws of singles and doubles in the upcoming Challenger tournament.
