October 30, 2018 | Soccer
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- The second-seeded Tennessee Volunteers were eliminated on PKs following a 1-1 draw against No. 7 seed LSU in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals Monday afternoon at the City of Orange Beach Sportsplex.
The Tigers (12-6-2) won the shootout 7-6 to advance to the league semifinals. Katie Cousins, Anna Bialczak, Bunny Shaw, Maya Neal, Rylie O'Keefe and Salera Jordan found the back of the net for the Vols, while Shae Yanez made two key saves between the posts in the shootout. LSU's Meghan Johnson hammered home the match-winning penalty kick on LSU's ninth attempt.
Trailing 1-0 in the 87th minute, Shaw heroically broke through with the equalizer with just 3:04 remaining in the second half. The senior from Spanish Town, Jamaica took a service from Danielle Marcano, willed herself past the back line and curved a shot inside the near post for her 11th goal of the season.
LSU freshman Shannon Cooke opened the scoring with the first goal of her collegiate career, driving a shot into the upper right corner in the 52nd minute of play. The score was double-assisted by Adrienne Richardson and Marlena Cutura.
Tennessee (13-2-3) outshot the Tigers 28-17 with a dominant 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Senior forward Danielle Marcano led all players with eight shot attempts, four of those on frame.
UP NEXT: The Vols will await their postseason selection, looking to make their first back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament since doing so in 2011 and 2012. The NCAA Tournament selection show is set for Monday, Nov. 5, with the top-32 teams hosting a first round match.
