Shaw's Brace Lifts #10 Vols Past Louisville in NCAA First Round
November 09, 2018 | Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Senior forward Bunny Shaw netted a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes as No. 2 seed Tennessee came from behind for a 2-1 victory over Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night at Regal Soccer Stadium.
Trailing 1-0 in the 75th minute, Shaw took a long volley from junior defender Maya Neal into the box and connected from nine yards out inside the right post. Her second goal came 11 minutes later, as Shaw's cross from the right side ricocheted off the left post into the back of the net, giving the Vols a 2-1 lead with less than five minutes remaining in the match.
It was the third multi-goal performance of the season for Shaw, who leads Tennessee (14-2-3) with 13 goals in 2018. The reigning SEC Offensive Player of the Year from Spanish Town, Jamaica is UT's all-time leader in goals per game with a 0.84 scoring clip over the last two seasons.
Louisville (12-7) notched the opener in the 20th minute, as All-ACC midfielder Emina Ekic found the back of the net from six yards out. The goal was assisted by junior forward Brooklynn Rivers, who crossed the ball into the heart of the box from the left side of the pitch.
Tennessee held the offensive edge over Louisville, outshooting the Cardinals 16-6 to go along with an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks. Shaw led all players with nine shot attempts including five on frame.
UP NEXT: The Vols are set to host the second and third rounds of the NCAA Tournament next weekend, welcoming three other programs to Regal Soccer Stadium. Two second-round matches are tentatively scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16 and a third-round matchup is slated for Sunday, Nov. 18.
