Gregg's Grand Slam Powers Vols Past Lady Lions

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Meghan Gregg hit a grand slam to lead No. 15/15 Tennessee to an 8-0 victory over Southeastern Louisiana to kick off the Tennessee Invitational on Thursday afternoon at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Gregg was 3-for-3 for the game and scored two runs on top of her grand slam. Aubrey Leach and Chelsea Seggern also had two hits apiece for the Volunteers (14-2). Sophomore right-hander Matty Moss got the start in the circle and tossed 5.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to improve to 8-0 on the year.
After stranding a pair of runners in the first inning, the Vols were able to break through in the second thanks to an RBI double to left center by Seggern, scoring Scarlet McSwain from second to give UT a 1-0 lead.
Taylor Rowland extended the lead to 2-0 with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. Gregg scored on the play after reaching on an infield single earlier in the inning.
Tennessee busted the game open with a grand slam by Gregg in the fourth inning to make it 6-0. Leach started a two-out rally with her second hit of the game and Jenna Holcomb followed with a bunt single. Brooke Vines walked to load the bases for Gregg, who hammered an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center for her fifth home run of the season.
The Vols added a run each in the fifth and sixth innings to end the game early, their eighth run-rule victory of the season. Alley McDonald was stuck with the loss for the Lady Lions (8-9) after giving up six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings of work.
GREGG GETTING IT DONE: Meghan Gregg entered Thursday with the second most RBIs in the country and added to that total with four more on the afternoon, bringing her season count to 27. All four of the Williamson, Ga., natives RBIs game on a grand slam in the fourth inning. It was the fifth homer of the season for Gregg, who went a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon with two runs scored.
HOME SWEET HOME: Tennessee improved to 21-1 all-time in home openers and 16-0 under Ralph Weekly and Karen Weekly. The Vols have won their past 17 home openers.
