Vols Fall to Auburn in H-T-H Matchup

AUBURN, Ala. -- Tennessee Women's Golf fell to Auburn in the head-to-head matchup after shooting 600 in the 36-hole Auburn vs. Tennessee Challenge on Sunday.

The Volunteers lost ground in the first round as they carded 303 (+15) compared to the Tigers' round of 292 (+4). However, UT fought back in Round Two, firing a nine-over 297 to close the gap with Auburn who shot 302 (+14) on the final 18 holes.
"The first round was a struggle for most of the team but we had several good rounds the second 18 holes and closed the gap on Auburn a little bit," said Head Coach Judi Pavon.
Auburn's Elana Hualde led the Tigers after shooting five-under on the day (68-72--140). Mai Dechathipat, who competed as an individual for Auburn, took home second place with a score of 143.
"Blakesly played well both rounds and improved a lot from the last tournament to this one. Hannah also had a solid two rounds," Pavon stated.
Three Vols--Blakesly Warren, Hannah Pietila and Anna Newell--finished in the top five. Warren, the 98th-ranked player in the country, carded one-under in the second round to shoot 146 (+2) and earn third place. The finish marks the best of her collegiate career. Pietila shot 149 (+5) to place fourth while No. 96-ranked Newell posted 150 (+6) to finish fifth.
Newcomer and Alabama native Micheala Williams carded her second top-10 finish of the season with rounds of 78 and 77. Williams is tabbed the 91st player in the nation according to Golfweek's rankings.
"Lucia had a good second round to leave on a good note," added Pavon.
Lucia Polo, one of Tennessee's four veterans on the 2016-17 squad, shot 156 in the tournament after shooting two-over 74 in the final round to place 10th (+12). She competed as an individual.
Fellow senior Teleri Hughes, who also competed as an individual, posted an eagle on the par-5 16th in the second round. She finished in 11th place (158, +14).
Emmie Pietila rounded out the lineup for the Vols. She shot duplicate rounds of 81 to place 12th (162, +18).
The Orange and White's sophomores, Allison Herring and Shannon Brooks, placed 13th and 14th, respectively.
Tennessee continues its spring schedule this weekend (March 3-5) at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
