"Today was a struggle," said Head Coach Judi Pavon. "It was windy out there and we didn't do a great job of choosing the right clubs. We had some good birdie opportunities but we didn't get them to fall."
Junior Anna Newell leads the Vols with a two-over-par 74, tying for 27th place. Newell recorded three birdies on Day One. One stroke behind Newell, senior Hannah Pietila sits in 42nd place. She shot 75 (+3) in the round.
Blakesly Warren, the top scorer on UT's 2016-17 squad, is tied for 51st place with an 18-hole score of 76 (+4).
Senior Lucia Polo rounds out Tennessee's counted scores with a five-over 77. She is tied for 62nd place while freshman Micheala Williams is tied for 73rd place (78, +6).
Competing as an individual for the Vols, senior Teleri Hughes shot a two-over 74.
"I stayed committed to each shot today and really tried to focus on what I learned about the course in the practice round," said Hughes. "The wind was tough on the front nine but I thought I did a good job of adjusting for it when I needed to. My putting was definitely an asset to have today and I did a lot of putting prior to make sure I was comfortable with the speed and breaks."
Hughes enters the second round tied with Newell for 27th place.
"Teleri had a good round. She was the last group off and it was a very slow round but she handled it well," said Pavon.
No. 8 Furman leads the 17-team field with a score of 385 (-3) and is followed closely by Michigan State (288, E) and No. 5 Florida (289, +1). Furman's Alice Chen, the 65th-ranked player in the nation, is in first place with a four-under 68.
"Tomorrow we are looking to bounce back and move up the leaderboard," added Pavon.
