EUGENE, Ore. -- VFL Justin Gatlin completed a fantastic week at the 2016 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials by winning the men's 200-meter title on Saturday at Hayward Field.
Gatlin, who won the men's 100-meter championship on July 3, won the men's 200 meters by clocking the fastest time in the world in 2016 at 19.75 (+1.6). Running in Lane 8, he defeated a talented final group that included U.S. 400-meter champ LaShawn Merritt, who finished second at 19.79. Gatlin will represent the United States in both the 100 meters and 200 meters.
Tennessee will have four former and current stars competing at the Rio Olympics, which run from Aug. 5-21 with coverage on NBC. Like Gatlin, fellow VFL Tianna Bartoletta (formerly Tianna Madison) will represent the U.S. in two events - the women's long jump and the women's 100 meters. VFL Tavis Bailey will compete for the Stars and Stripes in the men's discus. UT rising senior Kali Davis-White will compete for Jamaica in the women's 200 meters.
VFL Aries Merritt continued his incredible comeback from kidney surgery with an impressive showing in the men's 110-meter hurdles on Saturday. After running the No. 7 time in the semifinals at 13.57 (-2.1), Merritt finished fourth in the final, clocking 13.22 (+1.0). A photo finish was required to determine the second-place and third-place finishers and Merritt, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the event, missed making Team USA by one hundredth of a second. Devon Allen (13.03), Ronnie Ash (13.21) and Jeff Porter (13.21) were the top three.
