KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Nine players drove in runs for the 16th ranked Volunteers as they cruised to their fourth straight run-rule victory this weekend, soaring past the Green Bay Phoenix, 12-1, in the first semifinal of the Tennessee Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Gretchen Aucoin, Megan Geer and Meghan Gregg all hit home runs while Matty Moss continued her dominance in the circle. The freshman set a new career high with nine strikeouts and allowed only one hit in 4.2 innings pitched to pick up her fifth win of the year.
Moss has been phenomenal in her past four appearances, posting a 3-1 record and holding batters to a .156 batting average while allowing just 10 hits in 19.1 innings.
The Vols (15-5) broke the game open early, batting around in an 8-run second inning. Aucoin started the inning off with a double and capped it off with a 2-run homer. She scored on Lexi Overstreet's single up the middle for the game's first run and Scarlet McSwain followed that up with a double into the left-field corner to plate two more runs. Aubrey Leach brought her home with a single up the middle before a pair of sacrifice flies by Brooke Vines and Shaliyah Geathers brought in two more runs.
The Big Orange put together a 2-out rally to add four more runs to the board in the third thanks to a couple of 2-run home runs by Geer and Gregg to increase the lead to 12-0.
The Phoenix (4-10) scratched across a run in the top of the fourth to break up the shutout. Alanna Beyer roped a double into the gap in left center, allowing pinch runner Alexis Otto to score all the way from first and cut the lead to 12-1. A sac fly by freshman Logyn Lilley accounted for Tennessee's final run of the contest.
The win extended the Vols' winning streak to five games, tying their longest so far this season. It also extended UT's streak of double-digit scoring games to four. Tennessee has outscored its four opponents this weekend by a combined margin of 44-4 with one more game still to play tomorrow afternoon.
The Volunteers wrap up play this weekend in the championship game of the Tennessee Invitational tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. UT will take on the winner of tonight's second semifinal between St. John's and UAB. Tomorrow afternoon's game will be streamed live on SEC Network +/WatchESPN and will also be available on the radio on WNML AM 990.
