Vols Fall Short in Upset Over Auburn

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team’s upset bid over No. 11 Auburn fell just short in a 4-2 loss at Goodfriend Tennis Center Friday.
The Vols (6-7, 0-3) started the match strong, taking the doubles point over the Tigers (15-3, 3-0). AU would bounce back, though, quickly taking four of the first sets in singles. After UT and Auburn swapped points to make things 2-2, the Tigers closed out the match by winning on three straight courts.
In doubles, the duo of freshman Sadie Hammond and junior Eve Repic fell on Court 1 early, 6-4, to Alizee Michaud and Pleun Burgmans. The Vols responded with a win of their own, as junior Brittany Lindl and freshman Kim Kermet beat Andie Dikosavljevic and Paula de Man, 6-3, on Court 2.
The doubles point came down to Court 3, where the duo of senior Tiffany Tavares and freshman Margo Taylor for Tennessee faced the team of Alannah Griffin and Caroline Turner for Auburn. The match went back and forth before going into a tiebreaker. The Tigers pulled ahead early, but UT responded to win the match, 7-6 (4), giving Tennessee a 1-0 lead early.
In singles, Hammond held off No. 21 Andie Dikosavljevic to win on Court 1, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, and give UT a 2-1 lead. It was her first career win over a Top-25 ranked opponent.
Neither team would give up, as five of the six matches went to three sets, but the Tigers avoided the upset by winning three consecutive matches to beat the Volunteers, 4-2.
Tennessee will be back in action Sunday, as the Volunteers prepare to face the 46th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide at 1 p.m. ET at Barksdale Stadium or Goodfriend Tennis Center, pending on the weather.
