KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee women's tennis team upset No. 46 Alabama, 4-2, at Goodfriend Tennis Center Sunday.
The Vols (7-7, 1-3) started the match strong, taking the doubles point over the Crimson Tide (4-8, 0-4). UT kept up the momentum by winning three of the five matches in singles to seal the victory. It was Tennessee’s second win over a Top-50 opponent this season.
“It has been a great weekend,” co-head coach Mike Patrick said following the win. “Auburn was the 11th-ranked team in the country, and we had chances to win. What you have to do is give yourself chances to win, and today, we took advantage of that. I am proud of our girls’ effort because they had to really pull together and compete hard. It was a great day for us.”
In doubles, the duo of senior Tiffany Tavares and freshman Margo Taylor picked up their second win of the weekend, defeating Natalia Maynetto and Joanna Nena Savva, 6-3, on Court 3.
The Volunteers clinched the match in doubles when freshman Sadie Hammond and junior Eve Repic defeated the No. 32-ranked duo of Erin Routliffe and Andie Daniell, 6-3, on Court 1. It was their second win over a ranked team this season.
After Alabama tied the match at 1-1, Kim Kermet regained the lead for the Vols with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Natalia Maynetto on Court 3. The Crimson Tide tied things up again at 2-2 with a win on Court 2, but the Vols responded with back-to-back wins to take the match.
Junior Brittany Lindl edged Joanna Nena Savva, 7-6 (1), 0-6, 6-2, on Court 4, and Hammond came from behind to defeat No. 31-ranked Andie Daniell, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3, to clinch the match for UT.
“Every match is good for Sadie,” Patrick said. “She is learning and coming in and playing really elite players every time she goes out there. To have two really good wins in a row is not easy to do in our conference.”
Tennessee will be back in action Saturday, as the Volunteers prepare to face the 3rd-ranked Georgia Bulldogs at noon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens.
