March 11, 2016 | Men's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Tennessee Volunteers won the doubles point again Friday but could not swing enough singles matches in a 5-2 loss to Alabama in a match that started outdoors and finished inside.
The Vols (6-7, 0-3 SEC) won the doubles point and got a singles victory from freshman Srdjan Jakovljevic, who improved to 3-0 in singles in SEC play. After play moved indoors because of rain, Jakovljevic was off in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Spencer Richey on court 4.
Alabama swung the momentum late in singles play when Tennessee lost three critical tiebreakers in a few minutes' time, two of them resulting in match wins for Alabama. Matthew Rossouw beat freshman Jack Heslin 6-3, 7-6 to tie the match 2-2 on court 6, and the Crimson Tide took a 3-2 lead when Grayson Goldin beat Preston Touliatos 7-5, 7-5 on court 5.
From there, only two matches were still on court in second-set tiebreakers. Timo Stodder lost his second set to force a third on court 2, and then Alabama clinched the match at 4-2 when Becker O'Shaughnessey beat Jack Schipanski 6-2, 7-6 on court 3.
The Vols' road weekend continues Sunday with a match at Mississippi State at 2 p.m. Eastern.
