Vols Win Doubles, Lose Match at Mississippi State

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Tennessee Volunteers won the doubles point for the second consecutive SEC men's tennis match Sunday but could not follow in singles in a 6-1 loss at Mississippi State.
The Vols (6-8, 0-4 SEC) got on the board with the doubles point thanks to 6-3 wins from Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski at the top of the lineup and Timo Stodder and Srdjan Jakovljevic on court 3.
Mississippi State (11-3, 3-1) won four of six first sets and surged ahead 3-1 with straight set wins on courts 3, 5 and 6. Niclas Braun clinched the match with a 7-6(5), 6-2 win over Jakovljevic on court 4, the freshman's first SEC loss this spring.
With the match clinched, Valero and Stodder both narrowly missed on collecting ranked victories in super tiebreakers. Valero lost to 36th-ranked Mate Cutura 7-5, 3-6, [10-8] at the top of the lineup, and Stodder fell to No. 77 Rishab Agarwal 6-7(1), 7-5, [10-2] on court 2.
The Vols play Southern Illinois on Wednesday in the Tennessee/SIU Scramble in Gulf Shores, Ala.
