20 for 20: 8 Days Til Softball Season
January 29, 2015 | Softball
Only eight days left until the start of the 2015 Tennessee softball season! Today we look back at the 2008 Lady Vols!
Tennessee celebrates its 20th year of softball in 2015. In honor of the program's 20-year anniversary, we will count down the 20 days leading up to 2015 season opener on Feb. 6 against Ohio by reflecting on each Tennessee softball team, starting with the first-ever squad in 1996. We will also count down the days by jersey number, reflecting on the past players who wore that day's countdown number.
The 2008 team went 50-16, making it five-straight years with 50 or more wins for the program. Tennessee hosted the Knoxville Regional for the fourth-consecutive year, but failed to advance after Virginia Tech upset the No. 13 nationally-seeded Lady Vols.
The 2008 roster included Nicole Kajitani, Kelsey Stander, Kelly Grieve, Ashton Ward, Danielle Pieroni, Natalee Weissinger, Kenora Posey, Caitlin Ryan, Megan Rhodes, Shannon Doepking, Allison Fulmer, Erinn Webb, Chandra Mogan, Jennifer Lapicki, Lillian Hammond, Anita Manuma, Tonya Callahan and Tiffany Huff.
Callahan led the way offensively, enjoying her third All-American season with a .465 batting average, 16 homers, 62 RBIs and 40 runs. Callahan and Posey (.362 BA, 44 stolen bases) each earned All-SEC honors. Callahan was also named the SEC Player of the Year, UT's second, after hitting .500 in conference play with 10 homers and 25 RBIs.
Ward (27-5, 1.88 ERA, 187 strikeouts) and Rhodes (23-11, 2.20 ERA, 233 strikeouts) were a formidable 1-2 punch in the circle.
