20 for 20: 15 Days Til Softball Season
January 22, 2015 | Softball

Only 15 days remaining until the start of the 2015 Tennessee softball season! Today we look back at the sixth team, the 2001 Lady Vols.
Tennessee celebrates its 20th year of softball in 2015. In honor of the program's 20-year anniversary, we will count down the 20 days leading up to 2015 season opener on Feb. 6 against Ohio by reflecting on each Tennessee softball team, starting with the first-ever squad in 1996. We will also count down the days by jersey number, reflecting on the past players who wore that day's countdown number.
The 2001 squad went 24-35 and Jim Beitia resigned as head coach after six seasons. He finished has UT career with a 233-163 record, one SEC Eastern Division title and one NCAA Regional appearance.
The 2001 roster featured Nikki Sexton, Janette Koshell, Stephanie Humphrey, Annie Fletcher, Maura Mollet, Andie Sherman, Melissa Radley, Nicole Schaeffer, Amber Rhinehart, Carissa Roustan, Nicole Murray, Adrianna Wilson, Maria Torres, Leigh Ann Ellis, Nicole Johnson, Nicole Borg, Hannah Low, Ellisha Humphrey and Rachael Mink.
Koshell led the team offensively for the second-straight year, hitting .322 with seven homers, eight doubles and 23 RBIs. Radley hit .304 and had a team-high 27 RBIs. Roustan established herself as one of the best defensive players in the SEC, setting a school record for third basemen by not committing an error over 40-straight games.
Stephanie Humphrey emerged as the team's ace, going 11-12 with a 2.52 ERA, 20 complete games and 93 strikeouts over 152.2 innings. Humphrey, Ellis and Borg split the innings just about equally with each throwing at least 113 frames.
The team's best win of the year was a 6-4 home upset over unbeaten No. 4 Alabama. Sexton had a two-run homer in the second inning and the Tennessee added four runs on five hits in the third to ruin the Crimson Tide's perfect season.
