20 for 20: 13 Days Til Softball Season
January 24, 2015 | Softball
Only 13 days remaining until the start of the 2015 Tennessee softball season! Today we look back at the 2003 Lady Vols.
Tennessee celebrates its 20th year of softball in 2015. In honor of the program's 20-year anniversary, we will count down the 20 days leading up to 2015 season opener on Feb. 6 against Ohio by reflecting on each Tennessee softball team, starting with the first-ever squad in 1996. We will also count down the days by jersey number, reflecting on the past players who wore that day's countdown number.
The 2003 team went 45-25 and made giant strides across the board. The team surged late in the season, making a run to the SEC Tournament semifinals.
The 2003 roster featured Christy Anch, Sarah Fekete, Stephanie Humphrey, Stacey Jennings, Katherine Card, Kristen Hays, Jessica Wilson, Blaine Teasley, Amy Wright, Amber Rhinehart, Kim Sanders, Kim Anders, Danielle Arriaga, Kristen Bass, Angela Brewer, Mandie Fishback, Lauren Mattox, Kristi Durant, Chemil Washington and Ellisha Humphrey.
Durant enjoyed a breakout freshman season, hitting a UT freshman record .424 to lead the team while knocking 14 doubles and driving in 39 runs. Rhinehart hit .340 with seven homers, 19 doubles and 37 RBIs. Mattox hit .338 and .320. Jennings was the team's top power hitter with 10 homers and Brewer had nine homers and 43 RBIs.
Tennessee had a formidable 1-2 punch in the circle in Jennings (21-15, 1.73 ERA, 117 Ks, 206.0 IP) and Humphrey (18-5, 1.97 ERA, 152 Ks, 174.0 IP). Jennings threw the first perfect game in school history (UT has 11 perfect games in program history) on Feb. 21, shutting down UNLV over seven innings with six strikeouts and now walks. Stephanie Humphrey threw the first eight-inning no-hitter in school history on April 1, shutting down South Carolina with four strikeouts and one walk. Stephanie Humphrey and Monica Abbott are the only two Lady Vols to ever through an eight-inning no-hitter.
Durant and Mattox earned NFCA All-South Region accolades.
