EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Tennessee sophomore Brynn Boren (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) won her second consecutive Women's Hospital Classic doubles championship Saturday afternoon at the Wesselman Park Tennis Center. Paired with fellow Californian Sabrina Santamaria for the second straight year, the duo won in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, [11-9].
Facing Nadia Echeverria Alam and Elizabeth Ferris in the championship match, Boren and Santamaria jumped out to a quick start by taking the first set, 6-4. Echeverria Alam and Ferris responded with a 6-4 decision of their own in set two before the California natives went the distance to win the tiebreaker, 11-9, and the tournament.
Boren and Santamaria impressively swept their way to the semifinal match, including a 6-0, 6-4 victory vs. the No. 1 seeded pairing of Angelina Gabueva and Federica Grazioso. After trading 6-3 sets in the semifinal round against Kyle McPhillips and Nicole Melichar, Boren and Santamaria used a 10-5 tiebreaker to advance to the doubles final.
As a freshman in 2011, Boren was a second team and freshman All-SEC selection while leading the Lady Vols in singles wins with 30. Alongside former Lady Vol Maria Sorbello, the two teamed up to win the ITA Ohio Valley Regional doubles championship. Boren also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in doubles with senior Natalie Pluskota.
