April 09, 2008 | Softball
Box Score??
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ??? The No. 11 Tennessee Lady Vol softball team (39-7) tallied three runs in the first inning and eight in the second on the way to a dominant 11-0 (5 inn.) triumph over Western Carolina in the opener of Wednesday???s doubleheader at the Lee Softball Stadium.??
??
Sophomore catcher Tiffany Huff led the offense by going 2-for-2 with a walk, run scored and two RBIs.?? Sophomore Erinn Webb laced a three-run triple into the right field corner as part of UT???s eight-run second inning outburst.?? Senior Kenora Posey paced the attack at the top of the line-up by going 2-for-4, stealing two bases and scoring twice.?? Freshmen second baseman Chandra Mogan (1-for-2, two runs) and Jen Lapicki and senior designated player Shannon Doepking each registered an RBI in the contest.
??
Allowing just two hits over four innings of work with seven K???s earned senior pitcher Megan Rhodes her 19th victory of the campaign.?? Junior Danielle Pieroni struck out two during her perfect fifth inning while requiring just nine pitches to complete the frame.
??
After Rhodes struck out a pair of Western Carolina hitters in a one-two-three top of the first, Posey opened Tennessee???s half with a slap that checked up right in front of the plate for a single.?? The Los Angeles, Calif., native swiped second to record her team-best 32nd stolen base of the campaign.?? Mogan walked, and the duo pulled off a double steal to reach second and third with none retired.?? Following a strikeout, Doepking dropped a sacrifice bunt as part of a successful squeeze play as Posey crossed for a 1-0 lead.?? With Mogan occupying third and Doepking on second following her first swipe of the campaign, Huff blooped a ball to left that dropped just inside foul territory before kicking to the left and rolling under the fence for a ground-rule double as two runs scored to make it 3-0.
??
Hammond keyed another threat opening the bottom of the second with an infield single back to the circle as WCU???s defense failed to cover the first base bag.?? Grieve reached safely on an error at first via a dropped throw as Hammond rounded third and scored Tennessee???s fourth tally.?? Posey singled on a bouncer to deep short and ended up on third as Grieve was caught in a rundown between third and home.?? A base hit from Mogan into left center brought across another run as UT???s advantage improved to 5-0.?? A single from Huff and a Lapicki walk, each occurring with the bases loaded, set the count at 7-0 in favor of the Big Orange.?? The assault continued as Webb drove a shot right over the top of the first base bag and down into the corner for a triple as all three runners came around to score for a 10-0 lead.?? The Hemet, Calif., native later scored the eighth run in the frame and 11th of the contest for the Big Orange on a fielding error behind third base.?? During the fateful inning the Lady Vols sent 13 batters to the dish while posting eight scores on just six hits.
??
The strikeout count for Rhodes improved to six as the Nashville, Tenn., product set down the Catamounts in order in each of the opening three innings.??
??
WCU managed its only two base runners in the top of the fourth against Rhodes.?? Shortstop Jamie Swank reached on a throwing error to christen the frame.?? She was joined by second baseman Amber Hawkins who beat out an infield single with one down.?? Beth Hauser lifted a fly ball to right that was squeezed by defensive replacement Grieve for the second out.?? Third baseman Stephanie Beatty delivered a base knock to center field as Swank rounded third and headed to the plate.?? Webb corralled the ball and delivered a strong throw to the dish as the catcher Lapicki applied the inning-ending tag keeping Western Carolina off the scoreboard.?? That brought an end to Rhodes??? day in the circle as Pieroni would enter in relief to begin the fifth.
??
The new Lady Vol hurler was impressive in her lone frame of work.?? The Madison, Tenn., native struck out first baseman Mollie Fowler and designated player Ashley Steinel consecutively, before inducing a foul pop-up behind the plate off the bat of Michelle Tating to end the contest.
??
No. 11 Tennessee will continue its Wednesday doubleheader against Western Carolina at approximately 5:55 p.m.?? Live stats will be available through utladyvols.com and, as always, periodic updates of the UT games will be recorded on the Lady Vol Hotline (865-974-8700, box #6).
