Caitlin Whoriskey Tabbed Lady Vol Athlete of the Week

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Following a successful stay at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships in Winston-Salem, N.C., University of Tennessee junior Caitlin Whoriskey has been named Lady Vol Athlete of the Week. The East Sandwich, Mass., native claimed four singles wins before being ousted in the semifinal round, in addition to reaching the quarterfinals in the doubles draw with fellow classmate Zsófia Zubor.
The 5-8 junior, ranked No. 37 in the nation and seeded ninth at the tournament, did not drop a single set through her first four matches of the competition. She opened with a, 6-1, 6-4, triumph over Chelsea Preeg of Vanderbilt before notching a, 6-3,6-2, triumph over Elon's Anna Milian. Whoriskey then proceeded to take out Shinann Featherston from North Carolina, 6-3, 6-3, and Clemson's Keri Wong, 6-1, 6-0.
Despite winning the first set in her semifinal showdown with Clemson's Josipa Bek, Whoriskey dropped a hard-fought, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (2), decision to end her four-day stay at the tournament. With her four victories, Whoriskey improved her singles record this fall to 8-5.
In the doubles portion of the competition, Whoriskey joined forces with Zubor for the first time this season after the duo spent all of its sophomore campaign together, rising to as high as No. 2 in the nation in the process. After an opening round, 8-3, win over the Elon pairing of Millian and Kensrue, the Tennessee tandem was defeated by Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck from Memphis, 8-2.
Tennessee will next be in action when it closes out the fall portion of its schedule Nov. 6-9 at the Southeastern Conference Coaches Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
