NO. 7 TENNESSEE UPENDED BY RICHMOND, 1-0

RICHMOND, Va.
The seventh-ranked Lady Vols were unable to solve a tandem of Richmond goalkeepers, as the Spiders used a Carrie Holland goal with less than a minute remaining in the first half to upset Tennessee, 1-0, at First Market Stadium in Richmond, Va.
"Richmond played a great game tonight and deserved to win," said Head Coach Angela Kelly.
The Lady Vols carried the action the entire match, peppering the Spiders with 25 shots, including eight on goal, to just six for the hosts. Despite Tennessee's dominance, Richmond broke into the scoring column with less than a minute remaining in the first half, as Holland, a freshman forward, collected a loose ball and beat Orange goalkeeper Vanessa Phillips-Bosshart (Vernon, Conn.) to the left post with a low-angled beam from the right side.
The Lady Vols' best scoring opportunity came at the 32:33 mark when sophomore midfielder Ali Christoph (Columbus, Ohio) skied a corner kick into the box and, after fighting for possession, freshman forward Lindsay Brauer (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and senior defender Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind.) each took their hacks from five feet out, unable to solve Spider net-minder Meghan Cox. Cox recorded seven saves in 45 minutes of work before being relieved in the second half by Kelley Clark.
"We couldn't get the ball in the net tonight," said Dowling. "We had our opportunities but just could not put the ball away. Richmond played very well and deserved to win."
With 7:26 remaining in the match and Richmond still clinging to a one-goal lead, Christoph blasted a lazer from just outside of the box, beating Clark to her right, but the shot clanged off the right post and out of harm's way. For Richmond, it was the program's biggest upset in school history. The last ranked opponent that the Spiders had defeated was 15th-ranked Clemson in the First Round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
Phillips-Bosshart, named to Soccer Buzz Magazine's Elite Team of the Week earlier Thursday, made two saves for the Lady Vols in the loss.
"We'll come together in the next few days and support each other," said Dowling. "We'll refocus and get ready for UNLV."
The Lady Vols will return to Knoxville, Tenn. to play host to the UNLV Rebels, on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 2 p.m.
