ANN ARBOR, Mich.
University of Tennessee senior Tammy Encina opened the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships with a win over Georgia's Shadisha Robinson on Thursday. Encina, tabbed No. 27 in the ITA preseason rankings, downed Robinson, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(1), in the tournament's round of 32.
In the round of 16 on Friday, Encina will face ninth-ranked and seventh-seeded Amanda Johnson of Duke, who cruised by No. 14 Jessica Carleton of UCLA, 6-2, 6-2, in the first round. If Encina defeats Johnson, she will face either No. 8 Alexis Gordon of Florida or No. 34 Megan Bradley of Miami (Fla.) in the quarterfinals on Friday evening.
While Encina competes at the indoor championships, six other Lady Vols will be in action at the SEC Coaches Tournament in Peachtree City, Ga., over Nov. 7-9. Juniors Majen Immink, Breanna Kray, Erin Cohn and Claudia Farace, sophomore Melissa Schaub and freshman Blakeley Griffith, will all be competing at the event. Although draws for the tourney are not yet available, the competition should give the Lady Vols a preview of some of the competitors they will face during the dual match season in the spring.
The weekend of action will mark the final competition of the fall for Tennessee. The Orange and White are schedule to open their spring season with the Kickoff Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., over Jan. 16-18.
