After taking both ends of a doubleheader yesterday, Florida's offense continued its recent surge by pounding out 13 hits on its way to a 13-2 rout of the Lady Vols at Tyson Park on Friday afternoon. The contest was halted after five innings due to the eight-run rule. The Gators (32-30/12-15 SEC) totaled 35 runs in the three-game series, bringing Tennessee's (33-25-1/8-17 SEC) Southeastern Conference season to an end. Rookie Mandy Schuerman evened her record at 7-7 by limiting UT to five hits, while hard-luck Lady Vol junior Stephanie Humphrey fell to 22-19 with the setback. Co-head coaches Karen and Ralph Weekly's squad has dropped 12 of 14 contests entering Sunday's season finale versus Samford.
The Gators wasted little time in getting on the board, putting four runs across in the top of the first against Humphrey. Junior Jackie Marchetta poked a leadoff single to right center and was sacrificed over to second base by sophomore Jenilee Garner. An RBI single up the gut from Schuerman brought in Marchetta with the opening run of the contest. Following a stolen base by freshman pinch runner Brittani Houghton, sophomore Mylin Prieto's pop-up to right was secured for out number two. However, a throwing miscue by the Lady Vols on the tag-up allowed Houghton to bring the count to 2-0 for the Gators. Another damaging mistake by Tennessee on a grounder by sophomore Stacy Rosen extended the inning for UF. Junior Bree Berger stepped to the plate and delivered her seventh homer of the season to right for a 4-0 lead for the visitors.
The Orange and White countered with two runs on a couple of hits in the bottom of the inning to cut UF's lead in half at 4-2. Freshman Amber Rhinehart drew a leadoff walk from Schuerman and junior Blaine Teasley followed with a double down the right field line to give the Lady Vols runners on second and third. Soon after, a wild pitch resulted in Rhinehart racing home and Teasley taking third on the play. After senior Adrianna Wilson struck out swinging, senior Hannah Low earned a free pass. UT's designated player, senior Maria Torres, came through with an RBI single to score her teammate. The hosts would strand two runners on base when senior Nicole Murray had a fielder's choice to erase Torres and sophomore Ellisha Humphrey grounded out.
Freshman Nikki Baldwin started the second with a single, chasing Humphrey from the game. Rookie Jessie Franklin greeted senior reliever Nicole Borg with a flare into left, giving Florida runners at second and third with none out. A fielder's choice by Marchetta resulted in Baldwin being thrown out at the plate on a great relay from Ellisha Humphrey to Wilson. UT recorded the second out of the frame when the Wilson-Humphrey combination nailed Marchetta trying to swipe second base. Garner would rip an RBI double to drive in Franklin and end Borg's time in the circle. Sophomore Crystal Bobo entered the contest and retired Schuerman on a grounder to hold the margin at 5-2.
Bobo ran into problems in the third stanza, as she issued consecutive walks to Prieto, Rosen and Berger. A fielder's choice off the bat of junior Jennifer Mossadeghi erased junior pinch runner Jennifer Brown at the plate and then Ellisha Humphrey snared a liner from Baldwin for the second out. After Bobo walked Franklin to bring across Rosen, the Weeklys elected to replace the right-hander with Stephanie Humphrey again. Marchetta's fly ball landed between several Lady Vol players, resulting in a two-run double that expanded the Gators' cushion to 8-2.
Florida tacked on two more scores in the fourth, aided by two Tennessee miscues. Schuerman walked to begin the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A one-out base-hit from Rosen left runners on the corners and a well-executed double steal saw Schuerman tally UF's ninth run and left Rosen on third after another UT throwing mistake. A fielder's choice by Mossadeghi enabled her teammate to widen the Gainesville clan's lead to 10-2.
Three more runs in the fifth on five hits completed the offensive outburst for the Gators. With one down, Marchetta slapped a single to left, junior Prissie Walden stroked another single and Schuerman knocked a base-hit to fill the bases. A sacrifice fly by Prieto to drive in Marchetta and an RBI single by Rosen closed the margin at 13-2.
Out of the leadoff slot, Marchetta was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while the trio of Berger (2-for-3, three RBI, two runs), Rosen (2-for-3, three runs), Schuerman (2-for-3, two runs) contributed multiple-hit efforts. Five different Tennessee players accounted for the home team's offense. Humphrey wound up allowing 11 hits and 10 runs (six earned) over 3.1 innings.
